The founder:

Sharon Stevens is a primary school teacher, founder and director of Model Behaviour. She has been teaching for ten years, during which time she has taught full-time, job share and supply teaching.

She has been nominated for the Nottingham Evening Post and Radio Nottingham's Reach Out award (2008), interviewed on Bea Udeh's Sunday show on Radio Nottingham, a member of the CPS East Midlands Community Involvement Panel, regional winner of the 2009 NES Entrepreneur of the Year Business Competition, one of six national finalists, an Ambassador for Nottingham City Council, on the board of Tuntum Housing, Nottm City Council BME Forum, Faith In Families Trustee and Model Behaviour is affliated with NCVS.

She is a mother of three fantastic young men, Nathan, Stephen and Matthew. They too are using their own life experiences to encourage and inspire children and young people to reach their full potential.

How it all started:

It was during Sharon's time as a full-time teacher (2006) of year 6 children at a city school that she came up with the idea for Model Behaviour.

Before she went into her new class she was told that there were children who had said quite openly that they wanted to be a gangster! Sharon was concerned how she would get her class ready for SAT's and change their thinking. So she invited a few of her friends in to speak to her class, they came willingly as positive role models. They were a barrister, city sports development officer, a parent who was a doctor and the school’s site manager. The children were inspired to make changes regarding thier learning and set goals about their future careers,  there was a change in the attitude of the children.

She left that teaching position to enrol at NBV and took part in their New Entrepreneur Scholarship course as she wanted to run a successful and reputable business.  Whilst at NBV she also completed their ITQ course and has passed both courses which have enabled her to write her first business plan.

Schools visted:

Model Behaviour has been in several City of Nottingham schools, have ran programmes and assemblies according to the needs of that school.  So far Glenbrook Primary School; Robert Shaw Primary School; Walter Halls Primary School; Radford Primary School, Scotholme Primary School; Greenfields Community School and Highwood Player Junior School have all had the experience of having Model Behaviour in their schools.

These are some of the responses:

  • Very positive, would like to develop a programme across school;
     Pauline - Diversity manager

  • Children wanting to achieve to see benefits;
  • More children read at home
  • Encourages children to take responsibility for own learning;
  • Children are better at asking questions and listening to what others ask;
  • I enjoyed it, it was good and
  • Would love to see more.
